Tim Guy

Well-travelled Melburnian Tim Guy has graduated from solo act to bandleader, but he’s still the star of his seasoned ensemble. Fifth album Chords rolls up the best bits of ’70s rock radio and cult power-pop, all washed in dreamy strings and vocal harmonies. Guy wears his influences on his sleeve, from Big Star (“St. Petersburg”, “Mixed Up Mind”) to cosmic Americana - Gram Parsons style (“Electric Heart,” “The Rambler”). His ambitions take him across genre lines: the barroom country of “Footsteps” is the catchiest tune here, while “It’s the Weekend!” celebrates aptly with disco licks and falsetto. All the components may be familiar, but Guy reanimates them with giddy enthusiasm and a rare lightness of touch. Even the sad songs sound like they’re brimming with excitement.
